The Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, has unveiled an ambitious plan for a new initiative called the “Black Star Experience,” aimed at establishing Ghana as a premier destination for arts, culture, and tourism.
The initiative draws inspiration from Ghana’s iconic Black Star, a powerful symbol of hope, leadership, and unity across Africa. Madam Gomashie highlighted the initiative’s potential to unify the nation and promote its rich cultural identity on both a regional and international stage.
During her vetting on Wednesday, January 22, Madam Gomashie provided a detailed vision for the Black Star Experience, emphasizing that it would not just be a one-off event, but rather a comprehensive and ongoing program that would celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of Ghana.
The initiative, she explained, will encourage various districts and regions within the country to actively participate by showcasing their unique cultural attributes.
“The ideas around it revolve around what various districts and regions can do themselves to celebrate what is unique to those communities,” Madam Gomashie explained.
This approach aims to empower local communities to take ownership of their cultural assets, fostering pride and increasing visibility for lesser-known cultural treasures that are often overshadowed by more prominent locations.
By involving local communities in the celebration, the initiative ensures a decentralized approach that promotes inclusivity and gives every region a voice in Ghana’s cultural narrative.
Madam Gomashie emphasized that the Black Star Experience would not be an isolated effort, but a collaborative one involving various government agencies and ministries. This would allow the initiative to align with national strategies across multiple sectors.
“This is an opportunity to mainstream culture, tourism, and creative arts so that departments and ministries can align their mandates with ours,” she stated. By working together with other parts of the government, the program aims to create a unified national effort to promote arts, culture, and tourism as core drivers of Ghana’s economic and social development.
In addition to highlighting Ghana’s rich history and culture, the Black Star Experience is designed to provide a platform for young creatives and cultural activists to contribute to the national conversation, thereby fostering innovation and opening up new economic opportunities.
Through the initiative, young people in the creative arts sector will have the chance to showcase their talents and ideas, ultimately enriching the country’s cultural landscape while simultaneously stimulating the economy.
By providing a space for emerging artists and cultural entrepreneurs, the Black Star Experience aims to nurture the growth of the creative industry in Ghana, which has the potential to create jobs, promote entrepreneurship, and foster tourism.
As part of the broader strategy, Madam Gomashie envisions the creative arts sector as a key player in the nation’s economic transformation, contributing not only to cultural pride but also to job creation and sustainable growth.
The initiative is poised to put Ghana at the forefront of arts, culture, and tourism in Africa, creating opportunities for local communities while also positioning the country as an attractive destination for international tourists and investors in the creative industries.
By celebrating and promoting the unique cultural offerings from every corner of Ghana, the Black Star Experience aims to elevate the country’s image on the global stage, enhancing its reputation as a beacon of culture and creativity in Africa.
