Ministry of education refutes claims on teacher trainee allowance

-

The Ministry of Education has strongly denied claims that teacher trainee allowances are being scrapped, describing a recent headline by The Daily Graphic as “misleading” and “sensational.”

In a press release issued on February 4, 2025, the Ministry addressed the front-page publication of The Daily Graphic, which carried the headline: “Teacher Trainee Allowance to Go.”

The statement emphasized that the report misrepresented the Minister’s remarks.

“We wish to categorically state that the news item does not reflect the true and accurate reporting of what the Hon. Minister stated,” the Ministry asserted.

Providing clarification, the Minister of Education, during an engagement with the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), indicated that the government remains committed to supporting students financially.

“Government is open to augmenting the financial needs of students in the Colleges of Education,” he assured.

He further noted that the government was exploring the possibility of an enhanced loan scheme for students, should the need arise.

However, he stressed that allowances would not be removed until further discussions had been held and a firm agreement reached.

“The government would maintain the allowances until further deliberations and a firm agreement is reached with all stakeholders,” the Minister emphasized.

The Ministry called on The Daily Graphic to correct the “wrong impression created” and ensure that the rejoinder receives the same level of prominence as the original publication.
