President John Dramani Mahama has been commended for his hands-on leadership during recent negotiations on Ghana’s National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW), which resulted in a 10% increment for 2025.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, praised the President’s involvement, describing it as a show of humility and respect towards organised labour.
“President Mahama himself went to sit with labour for the base pay negotiations. This is leadership-humility-respect personified. Previously even common Ministers felt too big to sit with labour. RESET, no more gross disrespect for labour,” Prof. Gyampo wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) announced the new minimum wage of GHS 19.97 following the negotiations in Accra.
The increment, set to take effect on March 1, 2025, aims to balance the rising cost of living with business sustainability and employment growth.
Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, highlighted the government’s commitment to fair wages.
“We have taken into account the economic realities and the need to protect workers while ensuring businesses remain sustainable,” he noted.
Nana Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, President of the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA), called on businesses to comply with the new wage structure, while Joshua Ansah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), welcomed the increment but urged for continued improvements in workers’ earnings.
The President’s direct participation in the negotiations has been widely seen as a positive shift towards fostering respect and dialogue between government and labour unions.
