Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to streamlining passport acquisition in Ghana, aligning with President John Dramani Mahama’s widely discussed 24-hour policy.
According to Ablakwa, provisions have been made in the 2025 budget to employ 100 additional staff to facilitate a 24-hour passport application process and reduce the overall processing time to one week.
“We’ve allocated provisions to employ approximately 100 additional staff in the 2025 budget to launch the 24-hour passport application process and reduce the passport processing time to one week,” he stated while speaking to the media.
This comes days after he disclosed that the passport office has over 75,000 unclaimed passports in its possession.
According to him, after taking over office, he intends to audit the passports and reach out to persons who own them.
He intends to introduce a courier service that will be used to deliver these passports after they have been able to reach the owners of the passports.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was speaking on Accra-based TV3 when he made this known.
“We will roll out a courier system so that applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear indication of who the applicants are, and if addresses are available, we will call them,” he stated.
The Minister who spoke on ambassadors and High Commissioners said they will be given KPIs to guide their work.
“Ambassadors who do not meet KPIs will be removed. Every month we expect reports and we expect you to do major reforms.
