‘It’s attempt to silence women’s voices’, Atiku reacts to Natasha’s suspension

-

A former vice president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has condemned the suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Nigerian Senate on Thursday, March 6.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 7, while commemorating the 2025 International Women’s Day, the former vice president said there is an attempt to silence the voices of women in leadership.

Sending his “heartfelt appreciation to all resilient and hardworking women”, Atiku described women as the backbone of every society.

He said, “Women are the backbone of our society, playing indispensable roles in our homes, workplaces, and governance.”

He also commended women for their various contributions towards nation-building through their strength, determination and achievements.

However, citing the case of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan who recently suspended by the Senate, Atiku said the action of the Red Chamber undermines the principle of fairness, gender inclusivity among others.

His words, “However, it is deeply concerning that in a democratic society, attempts are still being made to silence the voices of women in leadership.

“The recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is an unfortunate example of such suppression, which undermines the principles of fairness, representation, and gender inclusivity. Women must be encouraged and empowered to participate fully in governance, not stifled when they dare to lead.

“On this International Women’s Day 2025, I reaffirm my commitment to the advancement, inclusion, and protection of women’s rights in Nigeria. A nation can only progress when its women are given the space and opportunity to thrive. Happy International Women’s Day!” he concluded.
