Unemployed man jailed for stealing laptop at Labour Ministry

-

A 36-year-old unemployed man, Foster Nyarko, has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing a laptop at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment.

Nyarko, who had gone to the Ministry in search of a cleaning job, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft before an Accra Circuit Court.

The court, presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, sentenced him to one year for unlawful entry and two years for stealing, with both sentences to run concurrently.

The prosecution told the court that Nyarko had previously been jailed earlier this year for stealing a mobile phone at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) while job hunting.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, a lawyer at the Ministry, left his office unattended on 4 December 2024.

Nyarko, who had been directed to see the Human Resource Director, instead went to the second floor, entered the office of the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, and stole an HP laptop valued at GHC24,745. He hid the device in his backpack and left the premises.

Following investigations, Nyarko was arrested and admitted to the crime, confessing that he had sold the laptop to an unknown person in Takoradi.

The case highlights the increasing concerns over security in public institutions and the desperate measures some individuals resort to due to unemployment.
