The Centre for Democracy and Socio-Economic Development (CDS) has strongly cautioned President John Dramani Mahama against initiating any process to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, and her deputies.
The warning comes after two separate petitions were submitted by the Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement Ghana and an individual, Daniel Ofosu-Appiah.
Both petitions are calling for the removal of Jean Mensa, Dr. Bossman Asare, Samuel Tettey, and Dr. Peter Atuahene from their positions at the EC.
In a petition addressed to the president, CDS expressed grave concern over the implications of such a move, warning it could set a dangerous precedent capable of damaging Ghana’s democratic stability.
“Today, those calling for the removal of Jean Mensa and her team are drawing inspiration from that unfortunate precedent.
“If this cycle is allowed to continue, it will erode the foundations of Ghana’s Fourth Republic and threaten the independence of the Electoral Commission beyond repair,” CDS cautioned.
According to the group, the independence of Ghana’s Electoral Commission must be preserved at all costs to protect the integrity of future elections and strengthen democratic governance.
“Your Excellency, the fundamental principle that electoral commissions should be independent of political influence should outweigh all other considerations.
“If this administration dissolves the current Commission, future governments will feel emboldened to do the same, creating a dangerous cycle of political interference that could ultimately undermine Ghana’s hard-earned democratic stability,” CDS stressed.
