My alarm on Boko Haram resurgence not meant to belittle the military

-

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has reaffirmed his support for the Nigerian military amid concerns over a resurgence of Boko Haram activities, clarifying that recent comments about the security situation were not intended to undermine the military’s efforts.

The Governor made the remarks on Friday during an assessment visit to Gwoza, where he approved the release of five Toyota Hilux vehicles and 30 motorcycles to enhance the mobility and operational capabilities of the military and local youth volunteers in Izge town.

Zulum said: “These vehicles and motorcycles are meant to improve rapid response and strengthen the capacity of our local security network.

“We are optimistic that, insha Allah, we shall never lose again.”

While commending the gallantry of both the military and residents in repelling recent insurgent attacks, Zulum addressed criticisms of his earlier comments regarding renewed terrorist threats.

He said: “When we said we have started witnessing a resurgence of Boko Haram, that doesn’t mean we are belittling the Nigerian military.

“We are just stating the reality so that we can come together to address the looming crisis and avoid losing ground.”

He pledged that his administration would ensure Izge is not displaced, praising the community’s resilience.

His words: “We will do whatever it takes to maintain law and order in Izge. Tell us what is supposed to be done, and we shall do it.”

Governor Zulum also disclosed plans for the phased resettlement of displaced communities, assuring that areas such as Ashigasha, Warabe, Guduf, Wala, and other smaller villages would soon be restored.

He was accompanied on the visit by several top state officials, including the member representing Gwoza in the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Buba Abatcha; Head of Service, Dr. Muhammad Ghuluze; and Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele.
