Bright Simons, the Vice President of Policy Think Tank IMANI Africa, has decided to stand by his statements in response to businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
Ibrahim Mahama, a prominent business figure, along with his company Engineers & Planners (E&P), has initiated a defamation lawsuit against policy analyst and social commentator Bright Simons, demanding GHS10 million in general damages.
The writ of summons, submitted to the Accra High Court, accuses Mr. Simons of disseminating false and harmful statements that have adversely affected the reputation and business standing of both the businessman and his firm.
As per the statement of claim, the plaintiffs assert that Bright Simons made defamatory remarks in an article shared on his website and social media channels.
Among the allegations mentioned are insinuations that E&P is facing financial difficulties due to a temporary halt in mining operations by Gold Fields at the Damang Mine, where E&P serves as a contractor.
The plaintiffs argue that Mr. Simons’ assertions — including claims that E&P’s creditors are “up in arms” and that the President’s brother is manipulating mining policy for personal benefit — are completely unfounded.
The lawsuit claims that such statements suggest Mr. Mahama is exploiting his familial ties with former President John Dramani Mahama to gain unfair business advantages.
The plaintiffs believe that these statements have damaged their reputations, raised alarms among business associates and investors, and compromised E&P’s credibility in the mining industry.
They argue that the publications were made “with malice” and aimed at diminishing their public standing.
However, in a tweet addressing the lawsuit, Bright Simons stated that he intends to contest the suit after thorough consideration.
