The Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has urged the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to rethink its upcoming strike set for Monday, June 9, 2025.
The Association declared its intention to strike on Wednesday, May 28, pointing to unresolved issues regarding service conditions.
However, Dr. Pelpuo cautioned that such a strike could significantly impact the nation’s healthcare system. He emphasized the necessity of communication among all parties involved.
“When we go on strike, it affects society as a whole. No matter what sector you are in, it has a direct impact on society and progress,” he stated.
“This indicates that employers and stakeholders should consistently collaborate to resolve issues before a strike becomes necessary. Ultimately, the government must heed their concerns, and health authorities must also pay attention to them.”
In the meantime, a joint statement released on the same day by the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana and the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, along with other unions, distanced themselves from the proposed strike.
They expressed disagreement with the GRNMA’s interpretation of a collective resolution made during a previous meeting.
In response, the GRNMA criticized the dissenting unions, accusing them of undermining efforts for improved working conditions.
The Association contended that the splinter groups had neglected the welfare of Ghanaian nurses and midwives.
