No access to Wontumi: NIB rejects Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin’s visit

Former Vice President and the 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, along with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, were unable to gain access to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters located in Accra.

Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was reportedly moved to the NIB after being detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Although Dr. Bawumia and Afenyo-Markin received permission to enter the NIB premises at Ridge on Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia later confirmed that they were unable to meet with Wontumi after leaving the facility.

Dr. Bawumia is reportedly spearheading efforts to fulfill the GHS50 million bail conditions set by EOCO, which require two valid sureties. However, these conditions remain unmet, resulting in Wontumi’s continued detention.

In a display of support, numerous NPP MPs, senior party officials, and supporters convened at the NIB premises.

Wontumi was initially arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. He was subsequently taken into custody by EOCO, which granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28.
