Terminal 2 to ease terminal 3 pressure – Transport minister announces strategic shift

To reduce congestion at Terminal 3 and improve overall airport operations, the Ministry of Transport has launched expansion initiatives at Terminal 2 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The Ministry has announced that Terminal 2 will serve both domestic and international flights, with the implementation taking place in two distinct phases.

This strategic plan, jointly revealed by the Ministry and KIA management, seeks to alleviate the rising passenger traffic at Terminal 3, which has seen increasing congestion in recent years.

During a visit to the airport, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari highlighted the importance of the expansion project, noting that it is part of wider efforts to enhance the airport’s capacity to handle the growing number of passengers and cargo.

“If you go to Terminal 3 during peak hours, you will see the congestion there. Hence, we have split Terminal 2 into two phases; one for domestic flights and the section we are currently in for international flights.

“This approach allows us to shift some of the burden from Terminal 3 here, thereby easing congestion at Terminal 3 and creating a more comfortable and spacious environment for our travelers,” he explained.

The Ministry expects that the revamped Terminal 2 will significantly improve the passenger experience and boost operational efficiency at Ghana’s busiest airport.
