“They want him to die” – Afenyo-Markin blasts EOCO’s handling of wontumi

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused EOCO of inhumane treatment towards Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest and ongoing detention.

During a passionate speech at a Minority-led protest outside EOCO’s offices, Afenyo-Markin claimed that Wontumi’s declining health was being overlooked in what he termed a coordinated effort of persecution.

“The man is unwell. He’s in the sick bay. They want him to die, and then they will mourn him,” Afenyo-Markin lamented, criticizing the agency’s handling of the troubled NPP chairman’s case.

While he acknowledged the necessity of due process, he emphasized that justice should also respect fundamental human dignity.

“I’m not suggesting that if Wontumi has committed any offense, he shouldn’t go through due process. No. Don’t harass him. Don’t persecute him,” he asserted.

Afenyo-Markin also pointed to potential regional bias, arguing that Wontumi’s treatment might be different if he were from another area of the country or under a different political leadership.

“If Wontumi were from another region… if the MPP were in power, and a regional chairman from a different area had been arrested, we would have heard the NDC’s reaction,” he contended.

He made a personal appeal to President John Mahama, asking him to rein in overly aggressive officials within his government.

“It’s my humble request to President Mahama. To bring those hawks to order. He should provide them with a new code of conduct… That treating him humanely will not hinder your investigation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
