Appiah-Kubi: We’ve met bail terms, but hidden legal block keeps Wontumi in custody

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), has announced his plan to concentrate exclusively on legal avenues to facilitate his client’s release, pledging to “stay out of the politics and the theatrics.” Currently, Chairman Wontumi is in custody of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) for allegedly inflicting financial loss on the state.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Friday, May 30, shortly after an attempt to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release, his lawyer reiterated his dedication to operating strictly “within the law”.

“I implore you all; I will avoid the politics and the theatrics and will conduct my work within the law,” he remarked, seemingly addressing the increased political tension surrounding his client’s detention.

The lawyer confirmed a notable advancement in fulfilling the bail requirements, stating, “We have successfully provided the sureties; I can assure you of that.”

Simultaneously, he has submitted a request to the High Court to modify the bail conditions set by EOCO. Mr. Appiah-Kubi expressed his appreciation to “Honourable Bryan Acheampong” for his assistance in filing the necessary paperwork, mentioning that the properties offered were “greater than the monetary value required.” Despite having successfully presented the sureties, Chairman Wontumi is not expected to return home soon and will likely remain in custody over the weekend.

His lawyer disclosed an unexpected “legal challenge” that has arisen.

“We faced a challenge… a legal challenge that was unknown to me; there was an application… that restricts us,” he clarified.
