The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently being denied family visits while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), as confirmed by his lawyer.
Wontumi’s attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, affirmed, “That is true,” in response to claims from the NPP Ashanti Regional Chapter that EOCO is obstructing his family’s access to him.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi elaborated that, even as Wontumi’s legal counsel, he must “apply for the application to be approved” and “be led by an official” to meet with his client.
He also mentioned that Wontumi’s phones have been taken away, preventing him from communicating with anyone on his own. The lawyer considers this limitation a “violation” of his client’s rights.
His legal team has indicated they may seek further action regarding the denial of family access at an “appropriate time,” while their immediate priority is to secure his release.
Chairman Wontumi is receiving medical care at a clinic during his time in EOCO’s custody, and his lawyer confirmed that he “has been unwell and is still unwell.” His current detention by EOCO is related to separate allegations of “causing financial loss to the state.”
Despite these difficult circumstances, Wontumi is reportedly “not too happy with the situation” but has shown a willingness to cooperate with any legitimate requests from security agencies.
