Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has clarified the reason why former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was not permitted to meet Chairman Wontumi during his visit to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
He stated that there was a specific procedure established in agreement with the office of the former Vice President. However, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did not adhere to this process, which is why he was unable to meet Wontumi.
“There was an understanding that he would come with only a few individuals, but when he arrived, he brought a large group, which violated the agreement. That is why he was not allowed to see him,” Felix explained in an interview with Oyerepa TV.
He further added, “I don’t believe that Dr. Bawumia meeting him would have changed anything. He did not comply with the agreement with EOCO and NIB, which is necessary to foster the right environment for EOCO and NIB.”
Chairman Wontumi has been detained by EOCO, and according to the Deputy Attorney General, he faces charges of fraud, money laundering, and other offenses.
Although Wontumi has been granted bail, he has not been released yet because when his lawyers presented the bail bond, they were informed that there is an application to modify the bail bond currently in court.
They are optimistic about securing his release from custody today.
