The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail requirements.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, confirmed this news during a media interview on the evening of Monday, June 2.
He praised Dr. Bryan Acheampong of the NPP, who acted as one of the sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s release.
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail set at GH₵50 million, requiring two sureties to be verified, following his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, as part of ongoing inquiries into alleged fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
The allegations also suggest a possible connection to a broader international organized crime syndicate, as disclosed by Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai.
Additionally, it has come to light that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is preparing its own case file as part of the ongoing investigations into Chairman Wontumi’s activities, separate from the current EOCO and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) inquiries.
