From custody to cheers: Wontumi’s triumphant return to NPP headquarters

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, made a striking entrance at the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, just a day after being released from a brief period of detention.

Wontumi was freed from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail requirements.

Having spent a week in custody, Wontumi was welcomed by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters upon his arrival at the headquarters, where he openly thanked the party leadership and grassroots members for their steadfast support during his detention.

In contrast to his earlier appearance on the day he was released, when many noted he seemed unwell, Wontumi, dressed in all-white, radiated joy and engaged in friendly exchanges.

He even lifted one leg to demonstrate that he was fine, despite having limped on the day of his release.

During his speech, Chairman Wontumi specifically acknowledged the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, expressing gratitude for his leadership throughout his challenging time.

“I had to come and show how grateful I am. May God bless you. Everything will be fine,” Wontumi stated.

Wontumi was granted bail set at GH₵50 million, requiring two sureties to be verified, following his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged fraud and money laundering.

It remains uncertain when the government will wrap up its investigations into these allegations and potentially file charges against the NPP figure.
