Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, has disclosed that the government is in the process of revitalizing AirtelTigo.
He mentioned that the government is seeking strategic partners to take over the operations of the telecom company.
Mr. George made this announcement during a meeting with Chief Executive Officers and technical teams from MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo. The purpose of the meeting was to tackle ongoing issues related to poor service quality throughout the country.
“For the first time, I want to share that the government is currently in talks with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AT. We have initiated these discussions. We are allowing a 60-day period for the completion of these negotiations, so by the end of Q3, we hope to see a full rollout of improved services on AT,” he stated.
In 2021, the Ghanaian government finalized the acquisition of AirtelTigo from Bharti Airtel.
Challenges in the telecom sector
Despite the extensive infrastructure and the broad presence of telecom operators, subscribers continue to experience consistently poor network performance, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas and important regional towns.
The meeting included a detailed presentation by the National Communications Authority (NCA), which shared insights from a recent nationwide quality of service evaluation. This study, which encompassed 48 localities, was prompted by a surge in public complaints.
The results revealed significant deficiencies in service delivery, leading the minister to stress the necessity for immediate corrective measures and enhanced collaboration between the government and telecom providers.
Mr. George reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring that all Ghanaians, no matter where they are located, have access to reliable and high-quality telecommunications services. The proposed revitalization of AirtelTigo is part of broader initiatives aimed at boosting competition and elevating standards within the sector.
