Mayo Clinic has confirmed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is set to have surgery for prostate cancer, providing a medical reason for his absence before Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) by the June 2, 2025 deadline.
In a letter dated May 14, 2025, the esteemed U.S.-based hospital indicated that Mr. Ofori-Atta had undergone MR-guided biopsy and imaging tests in March, which led to a diagnosis of prostate cancer. A surgical procedure has been deemed necessary and is scheduled for June 13, under the supervision of Dr. Paras Shah from the Department of Urology.
“This surgical procedure has been scheduled for June 13… It is hoped that a closer date may open up,” wrote Dr. Ahmed Abdalrhím from the Mayo Clinic’s Section of International Medicine. He also mentioned that Ofori-Atta would need a recovery period before he could return to Ghana.
This statement comes just days after the OSP released a strongly worded announcement reclassifying Ofori-Atta as a fugitive. The office accused him of not complying with its request to appear in person on June 2, asserting that no further delays or remote negotiations would be tolerated.
“We want him here physically, and we insist on it,” the OSP stressed on June 3. “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not choose how the investigative body conducts its inquiries and the methods that suit him and his convenience.”
The Mayo Clinic’s announcement now adds a new dimension to the public discussion, juxtaposing Ofori-Atta’s health condition against the OSP’s demand for his physical presence for questioning. As the political and legal standoff escalates, it remains uncertain whether the OSP will reassess its stance considering the medical evidence.
