Wontumi’s condition not fake – Former MP says he nearly broke down from starvation

Former New Edubease MP, Hon. George Oduro, has stepped up to support the beleaguered NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, amidst ongoing speculation that he feigned a mild stroke to escape issues with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Chairman Wontumi’s appearance raised concerns when he was seen looking pale and weak after fulfilling bail conditions following his arrest on May 27, 2025.

The sight of him needing assistance to walk triggered a flurry of online rumors, including strong accusations from Garu MP, Dr. Thomas Anabah, who claimed that Wontumi was merely pretending to be unwell.

“There shouldn’t be any sympathy. There is no stroke in him. He’s just pretending,” the NDC lawmaker stated during a media interview.

However, George Oduro is challenging that assertion. In a fervent defense, he labeled the allegations as reckless and baseless, questioning Dr. Anabah’s qualifications as a medical professional. “I would be shocked if he is indeed a medical doctor,” Oduro remarked.

He explained that Wontumi’s weakened condition was not due to any illness—real or fabricated—but rather a result of self-imposed starvation during his five-day detention in EOCO custody.

“Chairman Wontumi refused to eat or drink water for five days,” he disclosed. “Naturally, if you don’t drink water for three days, you’ll break down. But he went five whole days without food or water. Why would he fake?”

Chairman Wontumi’s difficulties began when EOCO apprehended him over allegations related to economic and organized crimes—though the details have yet to be officially disclosed.

His arrest sent shockwaves through the political arena, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where he wields considerable influence.

He was subsequently granted bail amounting to GH¢50 million with two sureties to be verified. It took some time, but once his legal team satisfied the bail requirements, he was released.
