No visas for Americans: Chad responds to Trump’s travel ban

On Thursday, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby declared that his nation will halt the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens as a reaction to the Trump administration’s decision to prohibit Chadians from entering the U.S.

President Donald Trump revived a key policy from his first term on Wednesday by announcing a visa ban affecting 12 countries, including Chad. He accused these nations of having inadequate screening and vetting processes, as well as a historical reluctance to accept back their citizens who overstay in the United States.

The new restrictions specifically target Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Additionally, there will be increased limitations on visitors from seven other countries under the new travel policy, which is set to take effect on Monday at 12:01 a.m.

In a post on Facebook, President Deby stated that he is instructing his government to suspend visas for U.S. citizens “in accordance with the principles of reciprocity.”

“Chad may not have planes to provide or billions of dollars to offer, but Chad possesses its dignity and pride,” Deby remarked, alluding to the $400 million luxury aircraft that the ruling family of Qatar had proposed as a gift to his administration.
