The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has shown its readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Health, but it firmly states that it will not revisit discussions on issues that have already been settled.
This stance comes after a nationwide strike initiated by nurses and midwives on June 4, 2025, due to the government’s failure to implement the terms of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which encompasses allowances, incentives, and enhanced working conditions.
In response to the strike, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh highlighted the importance of dialogue and called on all involved parties to unite in search of a solution.
Nevertheless, during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 9, 2025, GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Jefferson Asare, clarified that while the association is willing to engage in discussions, it will not entertain any efforts to reopen negotiations on issues that have already been agreed upon.
“We are prepared to meet. If we receive a letter now, we will go wherever they want us to. But we are not open to renegotiation,” Mr. Asare remarked.
He also emphasized that among the various groups within the health sector, only nurses and midwives have not had their agreed-upon conditions of service fulfilled.
“In the health ecosystem, it is not just nurses who face issues with their conditions of service. However, we are the only group whose conditions have yet to be implemented,” he noted.
The ongoing strike has caused significant disruptions to healthcare services nationwide, leading to urgent calls from stakeholders and the public for a prompt resolution.
GRNMA insists that the government must fulfill its obligations instead of trying to renegotiate terms that have already been settled.
