Prominent labor consultant Austin Gamey has passionately called on striking nurses and midwives to halt their industrial action and return to the negotiation table.
During his heartfelt appeal on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday, the CEO of Gamey & Gamey Group cautioned that the ongoing strike jeopardizes patient welfare and could escalate if not addressed through constructive discussions.
Gamey shared his profound concern about the situation, saying, “I am distressed. Our customers are patients. Let’s not sacrifice them for a fight that can be resolved through dialogue.”
The experienced mediator indicated that his absence from recent negotiations might have influenced the outcome, stating, “If I had been in the meeting, maybe a different decision would have been taken.
“They didn’t invite me this time, perhaps because they knew my stance.” The labor relations expert stressed that industrial actions should be a last resort, not the first option.
“Every agreement that cannot be implemented immediately is a dispute – and disputes require dialogue, not strikes,” Gamey emphasized.
He made it clear that he is available, asserting, “If they invite me, I’ll be there in a second. Let’s go back to work and talk this through.”
Gamey also issued a serious warning about the potential repercussions of ongoing conflict, advising that “If you only focus on the faults of your employer, everyone, including some nurses, could perish before we realize we’ve gone too far.”
His comments come as the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association continues to disrupt healthcare services nationwide, with both parties still at a standstill over critical demands.
