The former President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. Kwaku Asante-Krobea, has pointed fingers at the Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, regarding the ongoing strike by the Association’s members.
He stated that the Minister has not fulfilled his responsibilities.
“I am pleased that we all recognize at this moment that the nurses’ and midwives’ withdrawal of services is a direct result of failed negotiations. Therefore, it is crucial for the Minister of Health to grasp that it is his duty to address the concerns of the nurses and midwives so we can progress towards a peaceful resolution of this issue,” Dr. Krobea expressed during an interview on TV3’s News360 on June 10.

His remarks came in response to the Health Minister’s earlier appeal for retired nurses and midwives to return to hospitals and support during the escalating strike by GRNMA members.
At a press conference in Accra on June 10, Mr. Akandoh stated, “Considering the gravity of the situation, the government is appealing to retired nurses and midwives with a sense of public duty to volunteer their services temporarily until the deadlock is resolved.”
“It breaks my heart that the Minister is calling on retired nurses and midwives to step in. This is a risky approach. It is ultimately futile, as the Minister should realize that retired nurses and midwives are unlikely to respond. They are life members of the Association, which looks after them,” he added.
He consequently urged the Minister to devise a more effective strategy to address the situation.
“Moreover, the Minister should not mislead Ghanaians. Is he aware of their whereabouts? How many can he realistically mobilize? And if only a few show up, will they be capable of substituting for the essential nurses in the various intensive care units across hospitals to assist the surgeons?
