Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has raised concerns about the alarming and ongoing increase in examination malpractice within the country, cautioning that it has evolved into a troubling norm that jeopardizes the integrity of the educational system.
“Every year, students take their exams, and each year, we hear reports of examination malpractice. Yet, very little is done to effectively address the problem.”
Even more concerning, he remarked, is the increasing participation of parents in these unethical activities.
“What is especially alarming is that some parents have become active participants in this illicit scheme, trying to obtain exam questions ahead of time for their children. This, in my view, indicates a deeper societal issue: the breakdown of socialization.”
Dr. Asah-Asante stressed that the traditional methods of instilling values from childhood into adulthood have significantly deteriorated.
“The way we teach values to our youth has fallen apart. Parents, who should be the primary role models guiding their children to become responsible and ethical members of society, are now involved in this misconduct. When those who are supposed to set the standard fail, what can we realistically expect from the children?”
He also highlighted the complicity of some educators in exacerbating the crisis.
“There are teachers who take shortcuts and assure students that as exams approach, they will be able to provide them with answers, and indeed, they do. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that both parents and students are drawn into such corrupt practices.
