President John Dramani Mahama has given the green light for the promotion of Deputy Directors of Education who have been in their roles for 10 to 15 years without any advancement. He has also committed to disbursing overdue teacher allowances, which include the 20 percent payments for out-of-station and deprived areas.
This decision comes in response to concerns voiced by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) regarding the halted progression of deputy directors, a situation largely caused by the lack of office space at higher levels within the Ghana Education Service.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, during a meeting held between the President and the GNAT leadership at the Jubilee House.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, who attended the meeting, stated that this decision means promotions will proceed despite the limitations on office space.
“Your approval signifies that those affected will receive their promotions even in the absence of office accommodation,” the Minister conveyed to the President during the meeting, which also included GNAT General Secretary, Mr. Thomas Tanko Musa, and economist Mr. Kwame Pianim.
Mr. Iddrisu further mentioned that Mr. Mahama has directed that no new school buildings should be constructed without ensuring there is provision for teacher accommodation. The Education Minister confirmed that this directive is currently being put into action.
The government is now waiting for a formal directive from the President to the Minister of Finance to release the promised allowances.
