Nana Akomea, fires back at Kennedy Agyapong over ‘false’ claims on NPP tradition

Nana Akomea, the former National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has responded to recent remarks made by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in Mampong, Ashanti Region, labeling his claims as false.

Mr. Agyapong, who previously served as the Assin Central Member of Parliament and is a presidential hopeful preparing for the 2028 elections, urged party members in Mampong to consider the current state of the party and to be wary of neglecting performance when making decisions about leadership selection.

Kennedy Agyapong: NPP should not reward poor electoral performance with second chances.
He was engaging in discussions about the party’s future and the consequences of its recent electoral outcomes under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s candidate for the 2024 elections.

He contended that a lackluster electoral performance should not be met with another chance to lead the party into the upcoming national election.

“Let no one be misled,” Mr. Agyapong stated. “Our party has a tradition of rewarding strong candidates. If you lead us into an election and perform poorly, you shouldn’t expect another opportunity.”

He disputed the notion that the NPP has a practice of granting its presidential candidates multiple chances, asserting that this only occurs when a candidate’s initial attempt shows considerable promise.

“In 1992, despite being a hero of our democratic struggle, Prof. Adu Boahen was not given another chance after losing that election. He was a principled individual who made sacrifices for the country, yet the party moved forward because performance is crucial,” Mr. Agyapong emphasized.

He compared this precedent to the experiences of former President John Agyekum Kufuor and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both of whom were permitted to run again after strong performances in their first attempts.
