National security at risk: Amidu Accuses OSP of mishandling Ofori-Atta probe

Martin Amidu has released yet another strongly worded open letter, raising concerns about the actions of the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, regarding his management of the corruption investigation involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

In his most recent correspondence, Amidu cautioned that issuing an INTERPOL Red Notice without adequately consulting the President or Attorney-General not only violates standard law enforcement procedures but also jeopardizes Ghana’s national security.

Amidu, who was Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor, stated that the Finance Minister plays a crucial role in the workings of Cabinet and the National Security Council, remaining a key holder of sensitive intelligence even after leaving office.

Therefore, he contends that the choice to publicly label Ofori-Atta as a wanted individual—while he was undergoing medical treatment abroad—was irresponsible and could harm the country’s security framework.

“Whether in office or out, such individuals should be treated with respect as they are valuable assets that foreign governments nurture for their national security objectives,” Amidu expressed.

“This is a fundamental national security principle that no capable national law enforcement agency would use to humiliate and disgrace such sought-after national security assets.”

He stressed that during his own time in office, he made sure President Akufo-Addo was thoroughly informed before any significant decisions were taken.

Recalling his management of the Agyapa Royalties investigation in 2020, Amidu mentioned a special meeting he convened with the President for security purposes, even though he did not take directives from him.

“So, no one should suggest that Kissi Agyebeng operates independently and can jeopardize the country’s security at his discretion,” he retorted.
