This is bigger than politics – Gloria Owusu calls out parliament’s silence on nurses strike

Member of Parliament for Trobu, Hon Gloria Owusu has criticized the efforts of the first Deputy Speaker to silence the Minority regarding the ongoing issues in the health sector.

She stated that the esteemed house cannot remain indifferent while the country’s healthcare system deteriorates.

In her view, lives are at stake, and immediate action is necessary to ensure that women and children, in particular, receive the care they need.

Expressing her stance in a social media post, she remarked, “Our hospitals are in crisis. Nurses and midwives are on strike. Ghanaians are suffering and dying due to inadequate care, especially among women and children.

Today, the Minority, led by our Ranking Member on Health, sought to address this pressing issue in Parliament. To our dismay, the First Deputy Speaker denied the request and even expelled the Ranking Member from the chamber. I strongly opposed that decision. This matter transcends politics.

It concerns people. It concerns the sick who are unable to receive treatment. It concerns lives that are being lost. I did not merely advocate for the Minority; I stood up for everyday Ghanaians, particularly women and children who urgently need assistance. Parliament must not remain silent in the face of a healthcare crisis.”

In the meantime, nurses in Ghana are still on strike following multiple attempts by the government to persuade them to reverse their decision.

They are demanding the implementation of their conditions of service by the government. However, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has indicated that if the government were to comply with their demands, it would place a strain on the 2025 budget.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced several measures to alleviate the damage caused by the strike and has appealed to retired nurses to step in.
