Funko residents clash with Believers worship center over road-damaging runoff

Residents of Funko, located in the Ahanta West municipality of the Western region, are raising concerns about a local church, Believers Worship Center, also referred to as Second Chance. They accuse the church of discharging liquid waste onto a vital access road, which is contributing to its rapid deterioration.

Residents claim that the runoff from the church has created a continuous flow across the road, leading to significant worries about potential damage to infrastructure and health risks.

Hayford Kofi Otabil, the Assembly Member for Funko, has criticized the church’s actions, labeling them as irresponsible and unacceptable. He mentioned that multiple formal complaints have been submitted to the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly, yet the issue remains unresolved.

“We’ve sent letters, made phone calls, and even organized meetings with the Assembly, but still—no action. If this continues, we’ll take to the streets,” Otabil warned. In response to the public outcry, Justice Noah, the Chairman of the Believers Worship Center, has denied the allegations, asserting that the liquid in question is not sewage or hazardous waste, but simply rainwater runoff from the church’s roof.

He also mentioned that plans are well underway to install an underground pipe to redirect the liquid to a drain across the road.

“We recognize the concern and are not dismissing it. The problem arises from rainwater flowing through open drains. To address this, we’re building an underground pipeline to safely channel the water into the main gutter,” Noah explained.

He further assured the public that the church is collaborating with the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly, which is providing technical assistance to ensure the project adheres to the necessary standards.
