A man was the sole survivor of the Air India crash that claimed the lives of at least 200 individuals, according to a police chief who spoke to an Indian news agency.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik informed ANI that the survivor was seated in 11A on the Boeing 787-8 flight bound for London.
The flight manifest provided by officials indicated that the passenger in that seat was British citizen Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.
Reports from Indian media mentioned that they had a conversation with Mr. Ramesh in the hospital, where he recounted: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.”
Additionally, Indian media reported that he presented his boarding pass, which confirmed his name and seat number. Commissioner Malik stated to ANI that the survivor “has been in the hospital and is under treatment.”
The flight, which was headed to Gatwick Airport, had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian on board, as per Air India.
The aircraft crashed into a building used for doctor accommodations less than a minute after it took off.
In a statement, the King and Queen expressed their “desperate shock at the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning.”
“Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,” the statement continued.
In the meantime, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has set up crisis teams in both India and the UK.
He addressed the Commons, stating: “We know that British nationals were on board and I can confirm that the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) is working urgently with local authorities to support British nationals and their families, and has established a crisis team in both Delhi and London.
