The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) is urging the government to promptly pay the 50 percent allowance on the basic salaries of all frontline health workers — a payment that has been overdue for the last nine months.
In a private meeting with Dr. Smith Graham, the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Association emphasized the necessity for quick action to alleviate the rising tensions among mortuary workers nationwide.
“We are appealing to the government through the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to take immediate steps. Our members are losing patience, and morale is low,” stated Richard Kofi Jordan, General Secretary of MOWAG. “We cannot continue to serve under such conditions.”
During the discussion, MOWAG also reminded the government of its commitment to provide financial clearance for the hiring of 500 new mortuary workers to help relieve the current strain on the workforce.
The Association additionally insisted on the payment of allowances for washing and cleaning uniforms, a one-time annual payment of GH₵1,000 per worker, along with the supply of sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
They also reiterated their demand for the COVID-19 risk allowance, which was promised by former President Nana Akufo-Addo but has yet to be paid.
Dr. Smith Graham acknowledged the issues raised and assured the Association of his dedication to resolving these matters.
“We take these grievances seriously,” Dr. Graham remarked. “We will work with the relevant ministries to ensure these issues are addressed swiftly.”
