Sylvester A. Mensah, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, has urged Ghanaian agribusiness exporters to not only aim to compete with other brands within their product categories but to aspire to become leaders in the global market.
He emphasized that it is crucial for “Ghanaian producers to be not just competitive but also empowered to take the lead.”
These comments were made during the opening of the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 11, 2025. The event brings together hundreds of exporters and policymakers for a three-day gathering to exchange ideas, showcase their products, and hopefully influence government policies to tackle the challenges they face.
Mr. Mensah reaffirmed his bank’s dedication to supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the export sector to meet international standards and thrive in the global market.
He envisions that “the future of Ghana’s agriculture is in transforming it into a value-driven, youth-led, technology-enabled sector. We need to reimagine Ghana as a competitive agro-industrial hub, where quality, innovation, and export readiness are the hallmarks of our national identity.
While reassuring the attendees of his organization’s collaboration with exporters, Mr. Mensah remarked that the Ghana EXIM Bank is not merely a financier; we are agents of transformation. We will persist in collaborating closely with government bodies, industry groups, and the private sector to turn this vision into reality.”
He stated, “Our support for agribusinesses has grown stronger. Through specialized programs like our Export Trade Facility, Receivables Discounting Scheme, and Provisional Guarantee Instruments, GEXIM has improved access to working capital for exporters, enhanced liquidity, and reduced investment risks in agricultural value chains.”
