GES extends SHS selection deadline to June 25 as private schools join free SHS program

The Ghana Education Service has announced an extension for Junior High School graduates to choose their desired Senior High Schools.

The new deadline is set for June 25, 2025.

This change comes after the decision to incorporate selected private schools into the Free Senior High School program.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) would like to notify all Heads of Junior High Schools (JHS) that the deadline for the school selection process has been pushed back to Wednesday, June 25, 2025,” stated a letter signed by Mr. Prince Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division.

“This extension is necessary due to the addition of private Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the selection process, providing candidates with extra time to make informed decisions. It is important to note that all current guidelines and procedures for the school selection process will remain the same,” the statement dated June 13 mentioned.
Agyemang-Duah urged students “to seek advice from their teachers, parents, and guardians to make thoughtful and informed choices regarding their second cycle education. Regional Directors are kindly requested to relay this updated deadline to all Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education, ensuring that final year JHS students are informed through their respective head teachers and are encouraged to take full advantage of the extended period to carefully consider and select their preferred schools.

“For your reference, a supplementary register of second cycle schools, including the newly added private schools, has been attached.
