GRNMA warns of possible strike return if government breaks promises

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a strong warning to the government, indicating that their recently suspended strike could be reinstated if the authorities do not fulfill their commitments.

Speaking on Newsfile just a day after the nationwide industrial action was called off, the First Vice President of the GRNMA, Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, mentioned that the association is relying on the integrity of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to uphold the agreements made.

“We don’t want to speculate, because the honorable members in the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health are honorable men of integrity, and we believe that whatever understanding we reached, they will not waver on their part of the agreement,” he expressed.

Akolgo further stressed that the association remains optimistic, rather than reactive.

“We are not going to think about resuming, whether to resume or not resume, it is better.

“We stay positive and hope that the right actions will be taken for nurses and midwives so they can continue to provide… nursing and midwifery services to the people of Ghana,” he added.

The strike, which garnered nationwide attention, was suspended on Friday, June 13, after assurances were made that the government would include the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in its mid-year budget.

However, the GRNMA has stated that it will not hesitate to take further action if these promises are not kept.
