Lawra SHS boat accident: Only 3 survive as 7 students feared dead in river tragedy

A group of students from Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region tragically drowned while trying to cross the Dikpe River on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Eyewitnesses and local sources report that ten students were on a boat attempting to navigate the river when the unfortunate event took place.

Regrettably, only three of the students managed to survive the incident.

Rescue operations led to the recovery of three bodies shortly after the event.

At the time of this report, a team of local divers and emergency responders is still searching the river for the remaining four students, who are also believed to have drowned.

“This is devastating… only three of them survived. We’ve found three dead so far, and the search team is still looking for the remaining four,” an eyewitness expressed on social media.

The reason behind the boat accident is still unknown, but there are growing concerns regarding the safety measures for students who frequently cross the river to reach their school.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement, but this tragedy is likely to ignite renewed national discussions about rural infrastructure and the safety of students in riverine areas.

Further updates will be provided as search efforts continue.
