Ministers to Face Parliament Over Tragic Drowning of Lawra SHS Students

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, along with the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, are set to appear before Parliament next week to discuss pressing issues regarding the shortage of life jackets in communities reliant on water transport.

Their appearance comes in the wake of the heartbreaking drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School, who tragically lost their lives while attempting to cross the Black Volta on June 13, 2025.

Considering the significance of the Volta River in this incident, the inclusion of the Energy Minister aims to facilitate discussions about the communities situated along the river.

During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, June 17, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako supported a proposal from Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for the ministers to present themselves before the House. He emphasized the urgency of the matter, calling for prompt action.

“We should examine the budget of the Interior Ministry to ensure that a portion is allocated to address this emergency. It is extremely important,” he stated.

In the meantime, the Member of Parliament for Lawra, Bede Ziedeng, has called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to swiftly provide life jackets to the communities along the Black Volta.

“I urge NADMO, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Lawra Municipal Assembly to assist Lawra SHS and the grieving families,” he remarked.

Ziedeng also committed to donating ten life jackets to the affected communities and called on Parliament to enact immediate legislative measures to avert further tragedies.
