NIA warns banks: Stop photocopying Ghana cards—It’s illegal

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a strong warning to Ghanaians, advising them not to permit institutions—particularly banks—to make photocopies of their Ghana Cards.

The Authority labeled this practice as both inappropriate and unlawful, stressing that institutions should utilize the official biometric verification platform provided by the NIA rather than creating physical copies of the card.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, June 18, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Emmanuel Ampomah Dallas, voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing misuse of Ghana Cards by certain entities.

“Regrettably, many of these institutions, instead of using our verification platform to obtain accurate information, have taken to collecting the physical cards from applicants and making photocopies,” he remarked.

Mr. Ampomah Dallas encouraged organizations that need ID verification to adopt the NIA’s biometric systems, which are specifically designed to provide secure and precise identification of individuals.

The NIA asserts that the correct use of its verification system safeguards both institutions and individuals against fraud, identity theft, and data misuse.

It is urging all public and private organizations to register with the platform and move away from outdated, unauthorized practices such as photocopying.
