Omane Boamah Slams NPP: “They Care More About Power Than the People”

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has expressed his disapproval of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming that it places political power above the well-being of Ghanaians.

In a Facebook update on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Dr. Boamah criticized the party for deciding to hold its presidential primaries earlier than usual in preparation for the 2028 general elections. This decision was made during a National Executive Committee meeting in Accra on Tuesday, June 17.

Dr. Boamah stated that the NPP has shown no regret for the economic and social difficulties faced by Ghanaians during its time in power.

“The Competent Economic Management Team caused significant harm to pensioners, individuals with disabilities, women, the youth, and Ghanaians as a whole,” he remarked.

“In just six months, rather than genuinely apologizing for their wrongdoings, they are concentrating on the upcoming elections.”

He further accused the NPP of consistently prioritizing its own interests over the advancement of the nation.

“NPP is only concerned about themselves and the next elections,” he concluded his post with: “The Alternative Is…” — a phrase associated with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to governance that focuses on the people.

On the other hand, NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has defended this decision, stating that it is intended to provide the party’s future flagbearer sufficient time to connect with key constituencies and generate momentum leading up to 2028.

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, Haruna mentioned that the new primary date — January 31, 2026 — is in line with suggestions from the party’s constitutional review process.

“This will adequately promote the candidate in terms of establishing connections within the international community, the business sector, and various stakeholders globally,” he explained.

He also noted that the early primaries will assist the party in shifting its focus from internal issues to national mobilization — a crucial step considering the NPP’s current minority position in Parliament.
