Tensions boil over in Parliament as Afenyo-Markin clashes with vetting chair over Supreme Court nominee

Tensions escalated in Parliament on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, during the vetting process for Supreme Court nominee Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confronted the Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, with great intensity.

The confrontation ignited when Chairman Ahiafor declared that a question from Afenyo-Markin was redundant and had already been addressed, preventing the nominee from providing another response. However, Afenyo-Markin was not willing to accept this.

“Chairman, if your intention is to halt this vetting, I will yield to you. Cease your actions.

“The entire nation is observing. Cease your actions,” he stated emphatically, showing clear signs of frustration. “If your goal is to make us back down, I am completely on board, and we will dismiss her and leave.”

The Minority Leader maintained that he had legitimate reasons for his inquiries.

“If you are deliberately orchestrating that a Supreme Court nominee should bypass this process, so be it, but my question is perfectly valid. I have conducted research and worked tirelessly, and I am confident in what I am asking.”

Chairman Ahiafor, however, remained resolute and rejected any claims of bias or manipulation.

“I have a brief reply for you. The public is not just observing me; they are watching all of us, and the judgment is out there.

“I will not be intimidated by you. I possess an unyielding spirit.

“I still maintain that the question has been posed, and the nominee will not respond to this question again,” he replied with a calm yet assertive demeanor.
