Emma Adwoa Appiaa Osei-Duah, who serves as the Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has made it clear that the sanitation jobs provided through the company’s youth engagement programs were never meant to be full-time roles.
She stated that these positions were intended to offer temporary support and engagement for young individuals who are transitioning from one stage of life to another.
During her appearance on TV3’s New Day program, which was monitored by MyNewsGh, Adwoa Appiaa elaborated: “This job was not established as a full-time eight-hour position. It was created to engage youth who may have completed their education and are waiting to take the next step. So, it’s about finding something to keep you busy until you decide what to do next,” she explained.
When questioned about whether the work could be seen as a standard 9-to-5 job, she confidently responded, “It is not a nine-to-five at all.”
Reflecting on her previous experiences supervising beneficiaries of the sanitation initiative, she shared how some individuals chose to prioritize the sanitation work over their own businesses.
“I had some ladies who were traders in the market. They sold cloth. But early in the morning, instead of opening their shop, they preferred to come and sweep.
“And I found it hard to believe. So I asked them, why wouldn’t you focus on your shop? They replied, ‘Oh, we love to sweep,’” she remembered.
