The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), following a court directive, has disposed of 3.3 tonnes of cocaine estimated to be worth around $350 million. The drugs were seized from a tipper truck that was traveling from Cape Coast to Accra in March of this year.
The destruction took place on Wednesday, June 4, after a series of confirmatory tests were carried out in the presence of the trial judge, state attorneys, officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
Alongside the cocaine, other narcotic and pharmaceutical substances confiscated by NACOC were also destroyed at the Bundase Military Base.
During the operation, the Director General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, spoke to the press, reiterating the Commission’s dedication to combating drug trafficking and abuse.
“We conducted this operation today in your presence to demonstrate our commitment to eradicating this issue. I urge those involved to stop. We will not passively allow them to import illegal drugs that threaten our future leaders.”
He also announced that special operations will commence next month to target drug dealers nationwide.
“I hope you all can support us in bringing them to light and holding them accountable. This cannot persist in our nation,” Brigadier General Mantey stressed.
