Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reassured Ghanaians that the government has not received any official communication from the United States concerning reports that Ghana might be included in a new U.S. travel ban list.
His remarks were in reaction to a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, 2025, which suggested that his administration is contemplating restricting entry to citizens from an additional 36 countries, Ghana included.
As reported by The Washington Post, a memo from the U.S. State Department, which the publication claims to have reviewed, indicates that this action is being considered as part of a wider immigration enforcement strategy.
While addressing Parliament on June 19, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that there is currently “no cause for alarm,” as Ghana has not received any formal notification from U.S. officials.
“Ghana has not been officially informed that we are going to be placed on any prohibition list or on any ban preventing our citizens from traveling to the U.S.,” he stated.
The Minister also revealed that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has reached out to relevant U.S. officials for clarification.
“I have requested assurance that these leaks are unfounded. So far, I can confidently tell the people of Ghana that there is no reason to worry,” he assured.
Mr. Ablakwa reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and mobility of Ghanaian citizens while keeping a close watch on developments regarding the reported policy change.
