Back-to-school campaign criticized for fueling teenage pregnancy — PTA

The National Council of Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) has urged a reevaluation of the Back-to-School Campaign initiative, which aims to support pregnant girls and young mothers in returning to school.

The Ministry of Education initiated the Back to School Campaign to tackle the problem of young adolescent girls leaving school due to pregnancy. This initiative was designed to enable young girls to keep attending school during pregnancy or after giving birth.

However, with a rising number of adolescent pregnancies among high school students, Madam Irene Sam, the Public Relations Officer for the National Council of PTA, is calling for a reassessment of the program.

She made her comments on the Akoma Mu Ns3m Show, hosted by Beatrice Spio-Garbrah, also known as Auntie Bea, on Akoma 87.9 FM.

“We need to revisit the back-to-school policy. The GES, the Ministry of Education, and all relevant parties must reconsider it because it leads many girls to believe that they can continue their education even after giving birth. The risks and consequences of pregnancy are so significant that the campaign warrants a reevaluation,” she expressed.

On another note, Irene Sam mentioned that the association plans to collaborate with the GES and the Education Ministry to educate young women on how to avoid sexual activity and resist the back-to-school campaign policy.

“We must advocate for abstinence, teaching girls the importance of preserving their virginity, valuing themselves, and recognizing the significance of education before thinking about having a partner in their lives.”

“Moving forward, we will work with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to closely examine the campaign, as it is not serving the best interests of the country,” she concluded.
