Justice Ackaah-Boafo condemns child marriage, calls for legal and educational reforms

Supreme Court Judge nominee, Justice Kweku T. Ackaah-Boafo, has firmly denounced child marriage, stressing the importance of education and potential legal reforms to safeguard the rights of vulnerable groups, especially girls.

In response to inquiries from Parliament’s Appointments Committee, he underscored the necessity of providing every girl child with the chance to pursue education and achieve her full potential, labeling forced child marriages as entirely unacceptable.

“Every girl child deserves the chance to be educated and nurture her talents, so when a child is forced into marriage against her will, it is absolutely unacceptable,” he remarked.

Shifting focus to the topic of witchcraft accusations, the nominee questioned the persistence of such practices in a contemporary global society and urged a thorough examination of the criteria used to make such damaging claims.

“But why are we discussing witchcraft in a globalized society? These are complexities we need to confront. We label individuals as witches, and we must scrutinize the standards that lead to such conclusions,” he stated.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo reaffirmed his stance against practices that infringe upon the rights of children and women, advocating for both education and suitable legislation as remedies.

“I firmly believe that children should not be married at a young age. Every child should have the opportunity to cultivate their talents, and if regulation through law is necessary, I fully support it. However, I believe that many of these issues can be addressed through education rather than solely through legislation,” he concluded.
