Lloyd Kelly leaves Newcastle to join Juventus

-

Newcastle United have cashed in on centre-back Lloyd Kelly, who has joined Juventus on loan ahead of a permanent switch in the summer.

Kelly only moved to Newcastle in the summer, joining on a free transfer when his Bournemouth contract expired. He was initially a regular starter but quickly lost his place under Eddie Howe, who handed Kelly just four minutes across Newcastle’s last 12 Premier League games.

Juventus approached Newcastle with a view to signing Kelly permanently and a deal has now been struck to take the 26-year-old to Italy.

Kelly joins Juventus on an initial loan deal but the Serie A side have the obligation to make the move permanent in the summer. Reports suggest the fee involved could rise as high as £20m.

It represents smart business for Newcastle, who have regularly complained about the fear of breaching the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules. Kelly’s departure represents pure profit as he was signed on a free just six months ago.

Kelly follows Miguel Almiron out the exit door. The Paraguay international has returned to Major League Soccer with Atlanta United parting with around £8m to get a deal done.
