The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Madam Emelia Arthur, has announced that the much-anticipated Anomabo Fisheries College, once completed, will not only serve Ghanaians but also benefit people from across West Africa.
Addressing the project’s timeline, she acknowledged that she had only been in office for a week but pledged to advocate for its swift completion and operationalization.
This development came to light when Madam Arthur, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Shama Constituency, visited the site alongside Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, MP for Mfantseman.
Dr. Arhin has strongly advocated for the college, recognizing its potential to benefit his constituents and fulfil a key campaign promise.
After speaking to the media after the visit, Madam Arthur expressed her commitment to functionalizing the institution.
“We have our local fishermen who possess indigenous knowledge, and we need to incorporate their expertise while equipping them with scientific knowledge,” she emphasized.
She also expressed disappointment over the current state of the college but remained optimistic that President John Dramani Mahama’s development agenda would ensure its completion.
Dr. Arhin, on his part, described the college as a unique institution in the Central Region and the entire country.
“In no time, Ghana will have its first Fisheries University right here in Mfantseman,” he said with excitement.
He highlighted the economic benefits the college would bring, including job creation and improved livelihoods for residents. “You don’t necessarily need a degree to work at the Anomabo Fisheries College. Even as a security personnel or cleaner, opportunities will be available,” he noted.
“The youth of Anomabo are in dire need of jobs, and we are hopeful that once the college becomes operational, it will create numerous employment opportunities for them,” he added.
A report from MyNewsGH.com indicated that most of the structures, including lecture halls, laboratories, dormitories, and the administration block, are nearly complete. Meanwhile, the principal’s residence is at the roofing stage, and teachers’ quarters are still under construction.
