Vetting Chaos: I was disappointed and embarrassed as an MP

-

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, has strongly condemned the disorder that erupted during the Appointments Committee sittings on January 30, describing it as both shameful and embarrassing.

Testifying before the Parliamentary Committee on Friday, February 7, the North Tongu Member of Parliament voiced his deep disappointment and frustration over the actions of the Minority members on the committee.

He argued that their conduct had subjected all Members of Parliament to intense public criticism.

“I was terribly disappointed and embarrassed as a Member of Parliament because I believe that the title honourable is earned by conduct and what happened that night was very disgraceful and shameful,” he said.

Ablakwa emphasised that the public’s perception of Parliament had been severely tarnished and that the behaviour exhibited by the Minority members dealt a significant blow to the credibility of the institution.

“All of us were bashed and brought into disrepute, but you cannot actually blame the public,” he stated.

He further stressed the need for Parliament to take decisive steps to restore its credibility.

“I still feel embarrassed, and I think there is a lot we have to do as an institution to reclaim our image and restore our honour and dignity before members of the public.”
