The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has expressed shock at the conduct of some Members of Parliament (MPs) during the vetting proceedings on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Speaking on the incident, she remarked, “I was amazed to see a whole MP carrying a chair and putting it on the table. The next time, I saw pushing tables away. I saw microphones being shifted away.”
The vetting, which was meant to assess ministerial nominees, took a dramatic turn when tensions flared, leading to chaotic scenes within the chamber. While disagreements during such proceedings are not uncommon, the level of physical disruptions witnessed on that day drew significant attention.
What stood out most to Emelia Arthur, however, was the composed demeanour of the parliamentary clerk amid the disorder.
“In all of that, what amazed me was the calmness of the clerk. She was so calm, just sitting down, so very professional. I mean, she has class,” she noted, praising the official’s poise under pressure.
